But sometimes that sugar they’re giving you ain’t quite what it seems. The saccharine eyes and sweet little lies…

You don’t need the FDA to tell you that fake shit is bad for you. Firstsex will do it for you.

BK scene stars Nikki Sisti (of THICK) and Elena Childers (aka DJ Tiny Hands)—accompanied by a revolving cast of contributors—have been playing stages around the city as Firstsex since 2023. Now, a day ahead of the official drop of their debut single, I’m stoked to premiere the song alongside their first music video.

From Firstsex, this is “Diet Cheat Lite.”

“Diet Cheat Lite”—the first single from Firstsex’s forthcoming EP Forever Flirt—was written in the aftermath of a world falling apart, when Elena discovered that her partner of half a decade had been cheating on her.

That said, the song isn’t a straight-up fuck you. Instead, it’s more about the feeling that hits when the rose-colored glasses are shattered. When the party’s long been over, and all that bullshit they’ve been spitting is the backwash in the bottom of a can behind the couch.

“‘Diet Cheat Lite’ is about the moment I realized my boundaries for my relationship had gotten ‘low and cheap’ and I’d finally hit the lowest I could go,” Elena says.

The duo describes their sound as “goth dance / girly punk,” and the video for “DCL” perfectly illustrates that aesthetic, featuring a coven of cheerleaders (wardrobe: Bring it On x The Craft) and a dreamily DIY filmed-at-a-sleepover feel, with Elena and Nikki binging on a buffet of pastries, cake and cotton candy with increasing mess and mania. A relationship, and a reality, crumbling in their hands.

While a product of old pain, and maybe some disgust, “DCL” is ultimately a song of empowerment. Hell hath no fury (or creativity) like a woman scorned and, a la Lily Allen, Elena has transformed her heartbreak and humiliation into a work of art—a gift for herself, and for those who have experienced a similar crash.

“It’s an anthem for anyone who’s had to completely deconstruct themselves in order to get their spark back,” Elena says of the song. 

Self-love, after all, is the most fulfilling. And a comeback never sounded so sweet.
